The Story of Aquamarine

Our stone for the February/March is Aquamarine, a beautiful light blue crystal.

Since ancient times, it was believed to be a stone of courage...of peacefully standing up for yourself and creating safety around you. Aquamarine was also believed by ancients to help travelers keep safe. It is one of the stones assigned to the Zodiac's water sign Pisces (2/19-3/20). Individuals with this sign can often be sensitive dreamers who care deeply and seek self expression. Aquamarine is a perfect helper for them.

In modern times, American jewelers assigned Aquamarine to the month of March. People born after March 20 in the Fire Sign of Aries may be drawn to this beautiful watery crystal, or may be pulled to a more fiery gem.

It is an I of 10 on the hardness scale, which means Aquamarine is an excellent long-lasting, scratch-resistant stone for jewelry and rings. It is often altered by jewelers to create a clear blue gem, because in nature Aquamarine is rarely clear and comes in a variety of blue shades, as shown above in one of FernShadow Studio's aquamarine pieces.
